BG+E Offices PERTH, WA
An abandoned 1930s warehouse at 484 Murray Street, Perth, has been adaptively redeveloped to provide a cost-effective, dynamic office for consulting engineers BG+E. The 1200 m² office was achieved without alteration to the existing shell and structure, with a second tenancy being created to lease separately until required for future expansion.
All elements inserted within the building’s volume are expressed as new or foreign, creating a stark, readable contrast between the new use and the building’s history as a home to street kids and a venue for rave parties. Graffiti and murals on the internal skin of the warehouse have been retained, a transparent glass bridge spans the upper floor void over reception, and two new timber staircases create fluidity between levels. The mezzanine floor has a balustrade of black netting tensioned on stainless wire between galvanised steel posts, maintaining the open office plan and providing a visual connection between staff members.
Director Lou Cotter led The Buchan Group’s project team and the project was completed in April 2005 for owner-occupier BG+E.
